I've made some changes to the Faves page, because frankly, it was too cluttered and too hard to keep it up-to-date. From now on, I'll just highlight an occasional favorite movie, book, actor, dessert, vacation spot - or whatever strikes my fancy. Hey, it is MY website, after all!
This month's fave is a nifty little movie released last year and pretty much ignored in theatres. It's called "Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day." Set in pre-World War II London, this wonderful romantic comedy features the marvelous Frances McDormand as down-on-her-luck governess Guinevere Pettigrew. She stumbles into a job as a social secretary to an aspiring starlet - DeLysia LaFosse. Played perfectly by Amy Adams, DeLysia is an apparently vapid flirt who gradually proves to be tougher and smarter than anyone around her expects. And Miss Pettigrew, at first a bit of an uptight prude, develops into DeLysia's best pal and co-conspirator.
DeLysia's trying to choose between a shady but powerful nightclub owner and her best friend and pianist, Michael. Miss Pettigrew helps her figure out where her heart really belongs - and in the process, Miss Pettigrew herself falls into a romance with a dashing fashion designer. The very perfect cast includes Ciaran Hinds of "Rome" as Miss Pettigrew's surprising love interest and Lee Pace as DeLysia's piano-playing true love. I have been carrying a torch for Lee Pace since he played the atheist theology student in "Wonderfalls." Loved him in "Pushing Daisies" and in Tarsem's very depressing but visually stunning movie, "The Fall." The role of Michael is very lightweight compared to the other stuff I've seen him do, but he handles it well.
"Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" is a lovely little romance, and a wonderful "gal pal" movie. Definitely one of my new faves, and I hope it'll be yours too.
